Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine
Squibnocket Animal Center uses both conventional and alternative medicine for your pet's complete health care needs. Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) is used for almost any condition your pet may have. TCVM is used for preventing and treating diseases. TCVM as well as western medicine rely on medical history and physical examination to make a diagnosis. It is importanto to remember that TCVM has its own strengths and weaknesses. Integrating western and TCVM helps to take advantage of the strengths of each.
Traditonal Chinese Veteirnary Medicine has been practiced in China for over 3000 years. In the United States these modalities are often considered "alternative" to traditional western medicine. This approach looks at the whole patient, including diet, home, heredity, and other factors to understand the basis of a medical disorder. Different modalities can be used in TCVM to restore a state of balance and good health.
TCVM includes five branches: Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Tui-Na (a form of massage and acupressure), Food Therapy, and Qi Gong (a form of exercise not used for pets). Appropriate treatment is on an individual basis.
